How to Explain Data Engineering to a CEO - Infostrux

Mark Cunningham joined Infostrux CEO, Goran Kimovski (Kima) for a live fireside chat. During the discussion, they covered a wide array of topics including the history of Business Intelligence, the Data Analytics industry, and technology trends that shaped and will continue to shape the industry.

Kima: How would you explain data engineering to a non-technical CEO?

Mark: I would say that the data engineer is kind of like the plumber that’s creating the piping and pulling the data together.

However, the analogy isn’t perfect.

There’s a requirement by a data engineer to provide quality water to the consumer. So I think that’s a big fundamental difference. It’s not just about piping data, their job is to be thoughtful about what data they are passing through their plumbing so that what’s being delivered has high quality.

There’s a different mindset of a data engineer than just delivering a pipeline.
